Magaldi Thermal Energy Storage (MGTES)
Based on fluidized sand bed technology, MGTES allows to store thermal energy from renewable sources or directly from the power grid, when the price is low and dispatch it when it is needed.
According to IEA, heat remains the primary end-use sector, accounting for almost half of global final energy consumption and nearly 40% of energy-related CO2 emissions in 2023.
Almost 75% of this industrial heat demand is still met by fossil fuels. This reliance on fossil sources highlights the urgent need for decarbonization in the industrial sector.
To address this challenge, Magaldi has developed the Magaldi Green Thermal Energy Storage (MGTES) system.
MGTES produces sustainable thermal energy that can be directly utilized in industrial processes.
By storing thermal energy from renewable electricity or the grid, when prices are favorable, MGTES optimizes the use of renewables and also enhances grid stability, providing green steam.
Working concept
MGTES is a Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES). So it can store energy in the sand from 8+ hours up to weeks, with minimum thermal losses.
The system consists of insulated modules that contain silica sand, heated to temperatures above 600°C.
In the Power-to-Heat application, the MGTES system operates in three steps:
- Charging. Energy from renewable sources or the grid is used to charge the system. The fluidization of sand particles is active.
- Storing. The fluidization is switched off and the sand packs at the bottom of the module. The absence of convection and the insulation of the tank limit the heat exchange with the outside, thus minimizing energy losses.
- Discharging. Stored energy is released as superheated steam to be used in industrial processes.
Key features
The MGTES system stands out for:
- Sustainability. It is mainly made up of silica sand and steel, thus representing an environmentally friendly solution, which does not contain or produce pollutants.
- Efficiency. Thermal losses are dramatically reduced to negligible amounts (typically <2% per 24h) and thermal energy can be stored for up to several days.
- Modularity. MGTES can be connected to the electrical grid, solar PVs, or both. The system’s modular design (available in different size modules) allows for customization based on specific customer needs.
- Flexibility. MGTES system supports synchronous charging and discharging, making it suitable for consistent baseload steam requirements.
Main applications
MGTES can be used for Green heat production 24h/7.
The Magaldi Green Thermal Energy Storage can be used to replace traditional fossil fuels in industrial processes from 150°C to 450°C (i.e. pulp & paper, food & beverage, chemical, plastic, etc.).
